Let’s take a moment to think about our purpose. What is it? What am I called to do? How do I know what it is? This is the question that is the most popular for us Christians to ask. And I see why. Its a pretty important one. I mean when you think about it, our new, born again lives are now linked to Christs’ and we want to follow him and his commands and be obedient to his will for our lives. So of course we’ll want to know God’s purpose in how he wants to use us for his glory. Now even though this is a common question, I think the counter question we’re asking as well without realizing it is, what is my gift? What is my talent? But then again, most people know that right? It’s those things that come natural, right? Those special skills that few people have. Its obvious. So why can’t it be that way in knowing God’s purpose for your life? Where do I start? How long will it take?
The answer to your purpose can be found in Matthew 28:19 – Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Now I know this doesn’t seem like a ‘purpose’ scripture out of the many I could have picked from like, Jeremiah 29:11 or Philippians 2:13 and even Ephesians 3:20. But these scriptures more so talk about how God works through us to fulfill that purpose. And our purpose is making disciples. Now I know the next thing that will be said is, ‘well isn’t that really God’s job?’ And the answer would be, yes. But who did he assign this ‘job’ or ‘task’ or ‘ purpose’ to? Us. So if that’s the case then why does this get looked over? (including by me)
This is again, not my strong suit unless I’m behind a screen. And I know I’m not alone in this and there are many others that feel like this. And I know for me its because it can be intimidating and awkward and no one wants to walk up to a complete stranger and tell them about Jesus. Especially now a days with so much tension going on between church and well…everything else. We choose to not ruffle feathers. Plus when we think of witnessing, we think of pastors out and about or missionaries or the loud guy yelling on the corner telling others to repent or die. We think of those people with the gift of gab who are called to do that because of their unique gifts and talents along with a strong voice and no fear given by God. I still think that sometimes. But when I really began to evaluate myself and looked back at what witnessing is. What witnessing does and who does it, I noticed that there are more than just those with the gift of gab going to and fro to do what Jesus instructed. This is something for everyone. And not everyone does it the same way. As long as we keep up with our quiet time and keep praying withou ceasing, then we can do it and the Lord will give us the words to say because we are connected with him. Now if you are not connected with the Lord in private you will not connect with God’s people in public. Witnessing must be genuine and people can sense when your trying to hard and being fake. So trust God in what he wants you to say and how he wants you to say it. Remember, this is truly Jesus’ last instruction he gave to his disciples and us before he went up to heaven. Now what’s your purpose?
