A few weeks ago I found one of my favorite movies I’d always watch when I was a kid and I was so excited. Roger’s and Hammerstein’s’ Cinderella featuring Brandy and the late, great Whitney Houston, I adored this movie and still remember every line and every song. (And yes I did watch it three times that day when I found it.)Mind you the last time I sat down and watched this movie with my sister and myself was when I was ten. Maybe even twelve. And as I was watching it there is this line that Brandy says when she is talking to Whitney Houston who plays the fairy Godmother. She tells her that, ‘…those three are all I got’. Now if you have seen this particular Cinderella, or any version of Cinderella, there are a ton of them and as you know the two step-sisters and step-mother are not so nice to say the least. So for Cinderella to tell her fairy Godmother that those three are all she has and she knows how they are treating her is not alright.
So I ask this question, why do so many of us hold onto things that we believe we need just because we think that its all we have? Even when we know its not good for us. This holds us hostage and limits our spiritual growth. The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you, ” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. This scripture clearly tells us that God is looking to give our lives ultimate fulfillment, but God can’t grant us any of this prosperity when we keep holding onto things that will drag us down. Seems cheesy or childish to go back to the Cinderella story, but you can get inspiration from anywhere. Cause the moment Cinderella let go of her step-sisters and step-mother and ventured without them, she got her ultimate fulfillment. Yes it was found in a Prince, but the same ending can be found for us if we trust God to give us something more. (Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;) His power, his strength, his peace; but all that can only be found when we let go and let God. Let go of the pain, the past. Let go of the person or persons holding you back from God’s divine plan. Let go of the situation you believe your trapped in. Let go of fear and loneliness because you think its your only friend. Trust God and recognize that this is not the end. That this is not all their is. God has the final say. And his word is true. (Psalm 18:2 “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.”)
