Obligation is defined as, something by which a person is bound or obliged to do certain things, and which arises out of a sense of duty or results from custom, law, etc. This had me thinking about the numerous reasons and excuses we do certain things. And more specifically I asked the question, why are we going to church? What’s the point? Why? For some we could be going to church because that’s what we do on Sundays. We go to church, do our duty and go on to the next task or errands we need to get done. For others it could be because we want to feel better or we need God and the church to do something for us. (a job, car, money, etc) Our true reasons can be rooted in selfishness. So I ask again, why? What is the result or purpose for when we walk into the house of God? Here it is. Opportunity. When we arrive to God’s house, we should go in with the excitement of the new opportunity we have to experience God’s presence. The opportunity to be made better. The opportunity to be drawn closer to God. The ability to experience Christs’ spirit is more than just an obligation, more than something my mom or dad made me do or something you can mark off your list. At some point, you must decide what you want. Do you want to show God that you showed up? Or do you want the opportunity to see God show up?
The reward of worship and a pure heart seeking God whole-heartedly, is God. He is the reward. (Hebrews 11:6 – And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.) In all that we do, we should be seeking God. God is the prize. He is the treasure.( Jeremiah 29:13 – You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.) So each time you head into church or even have your devotion time, think of the why. It’s an opportunity not an obligation that God has awarded us to be in His presence, yet again. There is peace, love, joy, deliverance, healing, endless possibilities when we seek Him willingly.
Exodus 33:14 – The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
